Coosa High School’s Academic Decathlon team will be one of twenty-four teams will compete in the 24th annual Georgia Academic Decathlon.  The state academic competition will be held on February 26 and 27 at Berkmar High School in Gwinnett County.   Coosa High has won the last eight consecutive Floyd County Schools Academic Decathlon competitions.

The Academic Decathlon is a competition in which teams of high school students compete in 10 academic events, individually as well as a team.  The program is unique because each nine-member team is comprised of: three “A” or Honor students, three:”B” or Scholastic students and three “C” or Varsity students.

Teams from across the state compete first in a district-level competition.  Each district winner then represents its school system at the state competition.  During the competition, students are tested in seven content areas: economics, art, language and literature, mathematics, science, music and Super Quiz Written.  In addition, students gain points individually in three communication events: public speaking, a personal interview and a written essay.  This year’s overall curriculum theme is “The French Revolution.”  The overall winning team will represent Georgia in the national championship to be held in Omaha, Nebraska.

The Coosa High team is led by coaches: Bill Doughtry and Chris Babb.  Coosa Team members include: Patrick Blankenship, Robby Mixon, Jared Van Curen, Jackson Forrister, Beth Angel, Luke Weeks, Ashley Jones, Ariel Watson, and Erica Franco.  Alternates for the Coosa team included: Brian Wasdin, Emily Weeks, and Stephen Jones.  Luke Weeks has been the top performer or tied as top performer in the Floyd County Schools Academic Decathlon for the last four years.
